The Story of Two Knights essays There once were two very strong knights. They were the best two knights the world has ever seen. They were also best of friends and when together, nothing could stand in their way. One of them was named Bob. Bob was a great knight. He feared nothing. His fighting techniques and sword wielding is truly amazing. He once took on an army of 100 men with just one hand. Many of the lower-class knights looked up to Bob, mainly because he was the leader, but mostly because of his incredible bravery. But there was one thing that troubled Bob, and that was the death of his beloved wife, Mary. She died from an evil witch that poisoned her in her sleep. People say they saw the witch go inside their house but when Bob arrived there he was too late. Now Bob wants to avenge his wife by doing whatever it takes. The other knight was named Jack; Jack was also a great knight. He saved a whole village from intruders by himself with only a frying pan. Jack was exactly very much like Bob. He also feared nothing and let nothing get in his way. But Jack was a little different from Bob. He was shy and he really loved beautiful women. As famous as he was around the village and castle, he just couldnt find a way talk to beautiful women. It is a hot sunny and peaceful afternoon. Bob and Jack were doing their usual training at the barracks with the other knights. Then all of a sudden Jack sees the king running towards them. The king comes in and calls for Bob and Jack. He said something terrible has happened and he needs their help. It appears that the Princess Elizabeth has been kidnapped. Jack knew the princess really well and was outraged when he heard what happened. So Bob and Jack gathered up all their weapons and went on a journey to find the princess. After asking around town about the whereabouts of Princess Elizabeth, both of them finally found where she was located. It appears that she is in some house in the middle of the forest. ...

Genius Genius Genius By Maeve Maddox A reader has asked for a post on the word genius, commenting, Its part of the word engineering but, in French, engineering is genie, which I associate with Aladdins lamp. Then, there is the genius spirit that ancient Romans associated with places. This comment offers much to address. I’ll begin with the Latin origin of the word. In classical religious belief, every human being was allotted a personal spirit at birth. This guiding spirit was called a genius, plural, genii. The role of the genius was to govern a person’s fortunes, determine his character, and to conduct him out of the world at death. The Latin word comes from a Greek verb meaning â€Å"to be born, to come into being.† This quotation from the OED show the word used in the sense of â€Å"guardian spirit†: Let their Guardian Genii still be watchful. N. Rowe Ambitious Step-mother. In addition to the kind of genii assigned to individual human beings, there was the genius loci, â€Å"genius of the place.† This spirit presided over a particular place: Watchd by the Genius of this Royal place. One may speak of â€Å"the genius of Democracy† and â€Å"the Genius of the Age.† Nowadays the word genius is often replaced by the word spirit. We’ve all seen cartoons showing a character being tempted: on one shoulder sits a little angel trying to restrain him, while on the other, a little red devil eggs him on. This depiction reflects the idea that people have not one, but two guiding genii: (a persons) good, evil genius: the two mutually opposed spirits (in Christian language angels) by whom every person was supposed to be attended throughout his life. Hence applied to a person who powerfully influences for good or evil the character, conduct, or fortunes of another. Genie and genii came to be used for demons or spiritual beings in general. Arabic jinn, the word for a class of spirits that may be good or evil, came to be spelled genii in English; singular genie became the word for one of these spirits, for example, one that might be imprisoned in a bottle. The use of genius as adjective meaning â€Å"intellectually superior† and a noun meaning â€Å"an intellectually superior person† developed in the 18th century as art critics began using genius to describe â€Å"native endowment† contrasted with â€Å"aptitudes that can be acquired by study.† This question on a homework site illustrates how this use of genius has obscured the word’s earlier meanings: If Hitler killed so many people, why is he called a genius? The youngster asking this question has no doubt seen Hitler referred to as â€Å"an evil genius† by someone who did not understand the meaning of the term. The answer given to the student’s question reflects the same confusion: You can say Hitler was a genius because he was so good at manipulating people.   He was able to get people to go along with his ideas even when they seemed to be completely crazy.  Because he was able to do this, you would have to say he was a genius.   Sadly, he used his great talents for one of the most evil goals ever. Hitler might be seen as the evil genius who influenced German doctors and prison camp directors to do abominable things, but labeling him â€Å"an evil genius† without reference to another person or persons is meaningless. The term â€Å"evil genius† refers to any personof whatever degree of intellectwho influences another person to do evil: The evil genius of the second half of Hitlers career was Goebbels. Ernst Hanfstaengel, Hitler: The Missing Years (1957). Finally, gà ©nie is the French word for engineering, but not because it has anything to do with the word genius. French gà ©nie means the same things that English genius does. I he next day, Gillian tried to concentrate on normal things. She hurried to school, feeling unrested-had she had nightmares?-and desperately in need of distraction. All day at school, she threw herself into activities, chattering and laughing and keeping people around her, talking about Christmas and parties and finals. It worked. Angel was very gentle, keeping quietly in the background. All the other students were hyperactive with the thought of only two more days of school. And by the afternoon Gillian had become caught up in her own frantic good spirits. â€Å"We don't even have a tree,† she said to David. â€Å"And it's five days to Christmas Eve. I have to drag my mom out and buy one.† â€Å"Don't buy one,† David said, smiling at her with his dark eyes. â€Å"I'll take you out tonight to a place I know. It's beautiful, and the trees are free.† He winked. â€Å"I'll bring the station wagon,† Gillian said. â€Å"Lots of room. I like big trees.† At home, she stayed busy, prodding her mother to wrap packages and dust off the plastic Christmas flower arrangements. There was no talk with Angel about how to tell her mother about witches. She was still happy when she picked David up after dinner. The flickering black-and-white kind. With each frame, the telephone pole in front of her got bigger and bigger. It was happening very slowly, but at the same time with utter inevitability. They were rushing oh-so-slowly toward that pole, and they were going to hit. On the right side of the car, where David was sitting. (No! I'll hate you forever†¦) She screamed it in her mind and the last word seemed to echo endlessly. There was time for that. And then there was a loud sound and darkness. â€Å"Can I see him?† â€Å"Not yet, honey.† Her mother scooted the plastic chair closer to the emergency room bed. â€Å"Probably not tonight.† â€Å"But I have to.† â€Å"Gillian, he's unconscious. He wouldn't even know you were there.† â€Å"But I have to see him.† Gillian felt the hysteria swelling again, and she damped her mouth shut. She didn't want a shot, which is what the nurses had said they were going to give her when she started screaming earlier. She had been here for hours. Ever since the cars with the flashing lights came and pried the station wagon door open and pulled her out. They'd pulled David out, too. But while she had been completely unhurt-â€Å"A mirade! Not even a scratch!† the paramedic had said to her mother-David had been unconscious. And had stayed that way ever since. The emergency room was cold and it didn't seem to matter how many heated blankets they wrapped around her. Gillian kept shivering. Her hands were blue-white and pinched looking. â€Å"Daddy's coming home,† her mother said, stroking her arm. â€Å"He's taking the first plane he could get. You'll see him tomorrow morning.† Gillian shivered. â€Å"Is this the same hospital- where Tanya Jun is? No, don't ask. Gillian knelt and pulled the shoe box out from under her bed. The wax dolls were garish, red and green, like a hideous parody of Christmas. Her first impulse at the sight of that poisonous green was to get rid of it. Snap off one doll's hand and the other's head. But what that would do to Tanya and Kim, she didn't want to think. Instead, she forced herself to get a Q-tip from the bathroom, soak it in water, and dab the iridescent green powder away. She cried as she did it. She tried to concentrate as she had when she'd done the spell, seeing the real Tanya's hand, seeing it heal and become whole. â€Å"Now may I be given the power of the words of Hecate,† she whispered. â€Å"It is not I who utter them, it is not I who repeat them; it is Hecate who utters them, it is she who repeats them.† When the powder was off, she put the dolls back in the box.
